Our plans for the weekend called for doing Sewards from the summer trailhead via the calkins brook approach. When we got to tupper lake I called my wife for a final weather check and the forecast had turned from a dusting to 2" overnight to 8-12" overnight. We were concerned about getting down to the summer trailhead and then not being able to get back out after our trip. Instead we decided to try for Allen. We woke up (late) Saturday and I realized that we didn't really have enough time to get Allen either but the rest of the group wanted to go for it anyways. We were on the trail by 8:45 but I set a turn around time of 1:30. As we started out I wasn't really feeling it so I told the other 2 to go ahead without me as I knew I couldn't keep a pace to get the summit and they possibly could. I hiked about a mile past the junction of the yellow path and the allen trail. The others in my group went farther but ended up getting somewhat lost. The trail was broken out by us on snowshoes, I would say snowshoes are required as the ground consisted of 4-6" of snow above an icy crust. We were back to the car between 4:30 and 5:00 |
The Good and The Bad |
The Good:The views hiking through upper works were ok and the bridges were pretty fun |
The Bad:No summit, freezing the night before |
The Drive |
| We hit snow leaving Syracuse but getting to tupper lake was no problem. Nicole called when we got there to inform us that we were going to get a lot of snow so we decided against the coreys trailhead and instead went to upper works |
